ISAT Fine Arts Performance Definitions
Grade 4
The following words are used throughout the performance-level definitions
to indicate frequency of a students behaviors. They are defined
here to provide more consistent interpretations of the definitions.
Consistently almost always or always
Usually more than half the time
Occasionally less than half the time
Seldom or inconsistently not very often, erratically applies
skill, shows no discernible pattern
The descriptions of fine arts attributes assume that all students
have a working knowledge of the language of the arts; that through
creating and performing, students understand how works of art are
produced; and that students have an understanding of the role of
the arts in civilizations, past and present.
EXCEEDS STANDARDS
Grade 4 students at the Exceeds Standards level consistently use
the vocabulary of the arts, identifying sensory elements, organizational
principles, and expressive qualities when describing a work of art.
They consistently explain and describe how elements and principles
combine within an art form to express ideas and support their opinions
with examples. They consistently identify similarities, distinctions,
and connections in and among the arts and compare ways various artists
express similar themes or ideas.
These students consistently select and use a variety of tools and
processes in creating and performing works in drama, dance, visual
arts, and music. They consistently describe a variety of artistic
processes and match these processes with the appropriate tools needed.
In addition, they consistently recognize and describe ways modern
technologies and traditional tools are used in the arts.
These students consistently apply the creative processes of problem
solving, interpreting, improvising, constructing, and imagining
or visualizing to communicate in the arts. They consistently demonstrate
a high degree of craftsmanship or skill in the performance or creation
of one or more of the arts. They consistently demonstrate the ability
to evaluate and refine their own artistic work and the artistic
work of others.
These students consistently demonstrate appropriate audience behavior.
They consistently describe how the arts contribute to communication,
celebrations, occupations, and everyday life.
Grade 4 students at the Exceeds Standards level consistently identify
and describe how the arts and artists communicate the similarities
and differences among various people, places, and times. They also
consistently identify cultural characteristics of a work of art.
They consistently list significant artists and describe their contributions
in one of more of the arts.
MEETS STANDARDS
Grade 4 students at the Meets Standards level usually use the vocabulary
of the arts, identifying sensory elements, organizational principles,
and expressive qualities when describing a work of art. They usually
demonstrate an understanding of how elements and principles combine
within an art form to express ideas and usually support their ideas
with examples. They usually identify similarities, distinctions,
and connections in and among the arts.

processes in creating and performing works in dance, drama, visual
art and music. They occasionally describe some artistic processes
and match it with appropriate tools needed. In addition, they occasionally
recognize and describe some of the ways modern technologies and
traditional tools are used in the arts.

ACADEMIC WARNING
Grade 4 students who perform at the Academic Warning level seldom
use the vocabulary of the arts in identifying sensory elements,
organizational principles, and expressive qualities when describing
a work of art. They demonstrate a limited understanding of how elements
and principles combine within an art form to express ideas and seldom
give examples to support their opinions. They inconsistently identify
similarities, distinctions and connections in and among the arts,
compare ways various artists express similar themes or ideas.
These students inconsistently demonstrate the ability to select
and use a variety of tools and processes in the creating and performing
works in any art form. They describe very few artistic processes
and seldom match processes with the appropriate tools needed. In
addition, they seldom recognize and describe ways modern technologies
and traditional tools are used in the arts.
These students seldom apply the creative processes of problem solving,
interpreting, improvising, constructing, and imagining or visualizing
to communicate in the arts. They demonstrate limited craftsmanship
or skill in the performance or creation in any of the arts. They
rarely demonstrate the ability to evaluate and refine their own
artistic work and the artistic work of others.
These students seldom demonstrate appropriate audience behavior.
They seldom describe how the arts contribute to communication, celebrations,
occupations, and everyday life.
Grade 4 students at the Academic Warning level inconsistently identify
and describe how the arts and artists communicate the similarities
and differences among various people, places and times. They also
seldom identify cultural characteristics of a work of art and do
not list significant artists or describe their contributions in
any art form.
