Dear Educators Serving ELLs:

This message is from the Division of English Language Learning.

Illinois TESOL is sponsoring a presentation at Harper College from 8:30 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2008 on the Changing Face of Students in Illinois:  Diversity and Challenges.

Dr.  Sonia Soltero, director of bilingual-bicultural education at DePaul University, will discuss the complex challenges faced by educators and school districts in addressing the needs of an increasingly linguistic and culturally diverse PK-12 student population in the U.S. and specifically in the Chicago metropolitan area and Illinois.  A presentation of the current demographic landscape provides the context for further discussion on implications and recommendations regarding federal, state and local policy, as well as proven effective practices that facilitates the highest academic attainment for language minority students.   There is also a presentation about the Lost Boys of Sudan.
