ISBE DELL e-Broadcast 2009.156 - West 40 Intermediate Service Center to Offer Summer Course on English Language Proficiency Standards and Scaffolding Instruction for English Language Learners-July 20-24, 2009
West 40 Intermediate Service Center 2 is offering a course designed to assist K-12 educators in applying the WIDA English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to scaffold instruction for the English language learners (ELLs) in their classrooms. The course provides an introduction to the use of a scientifically-based approach to scaffolding instruction as a means of incorporating the WIDA standards into the academic content and language instruction in classrooms that include English language learners (ELLs). School teams of ESL and general education/content area teachers who serve English Language Learners (ELL) are encouraged to participate. The course is scheduled to meet from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on July 20-24, 2009.
Participants in the CLIMBS™ course will:
- gain a thorough understanding of how to integrate the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and content standards into classroom instruction and assessment;
- apply a research-based, comprehensive approach to scaffolding or sheltering academic content and building language proficiency for English language learners that can benefit all learners; and
- use data from ACCESS for ELLs®, state achievement tests and classroom assessment to inform instruction.
Teachers will be able to earn 3 semester credit hours through Aurora University for one week of intensive work. The cost is $500 for registration which includes books and materials plus the cost of the 3 credit hours ($250) per participant.
