ISBE DELL e-Broadcast 2009.159- Northern Illinois University: 36th Annual Summer Reading Conference
The Department of Literacy Education at Northern Illinois University 36th Annual Summer Reading Conference will offer a unique learning opportunity focused on strategies, skills, and techniques for instructing literacy learners whose primary language is not English.
The conference, to be held at Waubonsee Community College Auditorium, Sugar Grove Campus on June 19, 22-25, 2009 (8:00 AM -- 5:00 PM) and July 3, 2009 (8:00 AM -- 5:00 PM) will offer three hours of credit.
Highlights include presentations by:
- Drs. David and Yvonne Freeman; renowned scholars and educators from the University of Texas at Brownsville who will provide valuable insight into English Language Learners. Their many publications, including their latest book English Language Learners: The Essential Guide, underscore their expertise in mainstreaming ELLs in the classroom.
- Carmen Lomas Garza; famed Mexican-American artist and author who will share her knowledge of integrating art and literature through hands-on project ideas.
- Marlene Targ Brill; local author and storyteller who will discuss the connections between reading and writing while offering tips on how to integrate multicultural literature in the classroom.
