English Language Arts Classroom Assessments Aligned to
the Illinois Learning Standards
The assessments are coded according to learning standard
and stage. Example: 1A.C is aligned to standard 1A, stage
C (third grade). Sample student work, when available, follows
the assessment.
1A.C - Using Context 
Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in sentences, applying
context clues, word analysis, previous experiences, and decoding
clues.
1B.C - Friendly Pattern Poetry

Prepare and read a free-form poem, applying the following
strategies.
1C.C - Pre and Post Reading Plan

Develop word associations for a list of vocabulary words from
a selection to be read, predict what information will be found
in that selection, and verify predictions.
2A.C - Story Pyramid and Summary

Create a story pyramid and a one-paragraph summary that demonstrate
their comprehension of a reading selection.
2B.C - Comparing Works by the
Same Author 
Compare and contrast in a Venn diagram two literary works
by the same author.
3A.C - Picture Reading Paragraph
Writing 
Write a paragraph about a situation that a picture portrays.
3B.C - Upside
Down Books 
Prepare a contrast chart that presents ideas contrary to the
actual elements presented in a storybook and use the chart
to create a book with illustrations.
3C.C - Greeting Card to a Character

Write a greeting card from one character to another within
the same text and write a paragraph explaining how the plot
or the character's feelings might have changed.
4A.C - Listen and Do Art 
While listening to directions, complete an art project.
4B.C - Reporting on my Field Trip

Deliver a two to three minute speech.
5A.C - Writing a Reseach Report

Research a topic and write a report.
5B.C - Gathering
Evaluating and Organizing Information for Research Report

Research, analyze and evaluate information gathered for a
topic.
5C.C - Oral
Presentation of Research Report with Visual Support
Use information, concepts and ideas in a visual support mode
to deliver an oral report on a researched topic.
