English Language Arts Classroom Assessments Aligned to
the Illinois Learning Standards
The assessments are coded according to learning standard
and stage. Example: 1A.D is aligned to standard 1A, stage
D (fourth grade). Sample student work, when available, follows
the assessment.
1A.D - R I V E T 
Decode vocabulary words and predict events in a reading selection,
applying the following word analysis and vocabulary skills.
1B.D - KWL Chart 
Prepare a K-W-L chart, applying the following strategies while
reading a nonfiction selection.
1C.D - Story
Pyramid and Comparison 
Create a story pyramid and a paragraph summary that demonstrate
comprehension of a reading text.
2A.D - Letter
from One Character to Another 
Develop, edit and prepare a final copy of a letter from one
character to another in that same literary work.
2B.D - Adapting a Fairy Tale

Prepare a new oral version of a fairy tale and make an oral
presentation.
3A.D - Take Offs on Predictable Patterns
Creative Story Writing 
Write a take-off of a book or poem with repetitive, predictable
patterns changing the words but maintaining the patterns.
3B.D - Writing an Article for a Children's
Magazine
Write a well-organized and coherent magazine article about
an event in a childrens fiction book.
3C.D - Persuasive Advertisement for a
Novel 
Create a poster and write a review to persuade classmates
to read a novel.
4A.D - Listening to a Guest Speaker

Listen to a guest speaker, take notes, and write follow-up
questions and a summary of the presentation.
4B.D - Let Me Convince You 
Deliver a 3-5 minute persuasive speech on a school-related
activity.
5A.D - Writing a Research Report

Research a topic, organize information, and write a report
on that topic.
5B.D - Gathering, Evaluating and Organizing
Information for Research Report 
Gather, evaluate, and organize information for a written report.
5C.D - Oral Presentation of Research
Report with Visual Support 
Write a multi-paragraph report using the researched information
and present the report orally using an original visual aid.
