Springfield – Students in 50 more Illinois schools will be able to dig through layers of history without getting dirty or leaving the classroom as part of the Museum in the Classroom project (MIC) for Fiscal Year 2000.

The MIC project connects students, schools and museums via the Internet. Students use technology to study and explore museums’ vast wealth of historical treasures and natural artifacts.

Students also work with museum curators, experts and technicians to research, analyze, evaluate and assemble information, turning ancient history into modern reality in their classrooms. Student research and projects will be published on the Internet so that other schools can benefit and learn from their work.

As the project starts its fifth year, 368 schools have received MIC project grants.

“The Museum in the Classroom project gives all of our students the same access to these valuable, exciting educational resources regardless of their location or socioeconomic condition,” said State Superintendent of Education Glenn W. McGee.

Schools are picked to participate in the program each year through a competitive selection process. All 60 schools that took part last year will continue in the project this year, bringing the total number of 1999-2000 participants to 110.

As well, two new museums joined the project this year. The Hult Health Museum in Peoria and Southern Illinois University Museum in Carbondale have joined the project. That brings the total number of museums to 12.

The MIC project grant includes computer hardware, software and inservice training. About 100 educators will also attend regional and statewide workshops to learn how to use project equipment and discuss project strategies with museum curators.

MIC project funding comes from a $46.2 million appropriation from the General Assembly for technology in the schools. The State Board of Education uses this project and others to help improve student learning and performance through the use of technology.

The list of 50 FY 2000 schools is attached.
