Springfield - Corrie Heck of Galesburg High School and Pete Mockaitis of Danville High School will serve as co-chairs for the 2001-2002 Student Advisory Council (SAC) to the Illinois State Board of Education. The two seniors were elected by the 2000-2001 members at the SAC's May meeting held in Springfield.

The SAC is currently a group of approximately 30 high school students from across Illinois. The SAC was originally formed in 1975 to bring student concerns to the attention of ISBE. The students who comprise the SAC are very diverse. They come from different geographic locations, ethnic backgrounds, and types of schools (public, private, parochial, etc.). However, they possess similar qualities, which include a strong work ethic, thinking "out-of-the-box", the willingness to set aside time from their busy schedules for SAC work, and the skill of working well in groups. Corrie and Pete exemplify these qualities.

Corrie is the daughter of John and DeAnn Heck of Galesburg and is very involved in both school and community. Corrie currently serves as Student Body President and French National Honor Society President. She is also an active member of Knox County Teen Court, National Honor Society, French Club, Art Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Her services in the community of Galesburg include the Galesburg Public Library Improvement Committee, Knox County Juvenile Justice Council and the Knox-Warren County Chrysalis. This will be Corrie's third year on the state council.

Pete is the son of Jan Mockaitis and the late John Mockaitis. Pete is active in marching band, SADD, chess team, scholastic bowl, DHS players, Future Problem Solvers, Student Advisory Board, Student Ambassadors, Key Club, Maroon and White, National Honor Society, and speech club. He has also served on the homecoming court and is president of the local Student Advisory Board. This will be Pete's second year on the state council.

The Student Advisory Council will meet approximately four times during the 2001-2002 school year and then present their work to the State Board of Education at their meeting in May, 2002.

Coordinators of the Student Advisory Council are Marilyn Holt and Michael Kotner, Illinois State Board of Education, 618/244-8383.
