New members of the Advisory Council for the Education of Gifted and Talented Children Appointed by State School Superintendent

Springfield, Ill. -- As required by P.A. 094-0151, signed in July 2005 by Governor Rod Blagojevich, seven new members of the Advisory Council for the Education of Gifted and Talented Children have been appointed by State Superintendent Randy Dunn.

Three members of the seven member Council are appointed to a term that expires in January 2009, while four members will serve a term that ends in January 2007.

Appointed to terms that expire in January 2009 are:

  • Dr. Sally Walker, Executive Director, Illinois Association for Gifted Children. Dr. Walker has been named Chair of the Advisory Council.
  • Ms. Cathy Greene, Coordinator, Gifted Education Programs, McLean County Unit School District #5.
  • Dr. Rosina Gallagher, Director, Gifted & Talented Academic Programs, Suder Magnet School, Chicago Public Schools.

Appointed to terms that expire in January 2007 are:

  • Ms. Jessica Rommel, Founder, Gifted Parent Advocate Group, Effingham Unit SD #40.
  • Ms. Tammara Alves, Teacher of Gifted Students, Belleville S.D. #118 and Co-Director of Kids on Campus at Southwestern Illinois College
  • Ms. Sally Thomson, Coordinator, K-12 Gifted and Talented Programs, St. Charles CUSD #303.
  • Mr. Terry James Mohaupt, President, Rockford’s Parents for Gifted Education, Rockford SD 205.

The Council is charged with advising the State Superintendent regarding all rules and policies to be adopted by the State Board relating to the education of gifted and talented children. Members of the Council were selected on the basis of their knowledge of, or experience in, programs and problems of the education of gifted and talented children, and together bring a total of more than 150 years of experience in working with gifted children.

The first meeting of the newly appointed Council will be held at the Illinois State Board of Education’s Springfield Office in February 2006.
