Illinois officials honor two Kane County schools for academic improvement
Annual list recognizes improving and high-performing schools from across the state
MAPLE PARK — State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch visited Kaneland Senior High School on Thursday to recognize two Kane County schools for being named to the 2013 Illinois Honor Roll. Both Kaneland Senior High of Maple Park and Nicholson Elementary School of West Aurora were recognized for making academic gains, earning an Academic Improvement Award.
“I am pleased to recognize these schools and the efforts they have made toward improving student performance,” said Superintendent Koch. “I hope that the families and community members of Kane County will also take time to celebrate their achievements as we all work to ensure that every student is prepared to succeed in college and careers.”
The 2013 Illinois Honor Roll lists 177 schools from 99 public school districts in Illinois. The Honor Roll is divided into three categories – Spotlight Schools, Academic Excellence and Academic Improvement. Each award has unique criteria that best reflect the diverse circumstances of Illinois schools.
- Spotlight Schools – Recognizes 37 high-poverty, high-performing schools that are beating the odds by overcoming the achievement gap.
- Academic Excellence Awards – 23 schools have sustained high performance over at least three years.
- Academic Improvement Awards – 125 schools are showing substantial improvement.
Principal Dave Russell represented Nicholson Elementary School from West Aurora School District 129. Kaneland Senior High School Principal Jill Maras said the district ensures that students understand the role of assessments in their education.
“We start teaching our students about what their test scores really mean starting in seventh and eighth grades,” Maras said during Thursday’s recognition ceremony at an all-school assembly. “Our students see the link between their learning in the classroom, the goals they have set and how assessment testing fits in their plans, and we are seeing the results of their connecting all these pieces.”
Kaneland Senior High School serves 1,365 students from Elburn, Maple Park, Sugar Grove, Montgomery, Aurora, Virgil, Kaneville, Cortland and North Aurora and is part of Kaneland Community Unit School District 302. Nicholson Elementary School has an enrollment of 327 students in grades K-5. The 2013 Illinois Honor Roll roster contains elementary, middle and high schools, including charter schools, and represents public school districts statewide.
