This page will provide stakeholders such as Regional Offices of Education (ROE), Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs), district administrators, and Illinois educators with information and updates specific to educator preparation and licensure. Information is updated on a quarterly basis​ and reflects content that will develop a better-informed workforce that will ultimately improve the lives of Illinois students.​

 Important Dates

  • ​Per Public Act 101-0643 (formerly known as Senate Bill 1569), all PEL, ELS-CTE, and ELS-CSBO licenses up for renewal this year were extended one year if not renewed by September 1. All eligible licenses have received this extension. Find more renewal information here.
  • If your license was automatically extended for one year, you will need to register your license for the additional year!
  • ISBE Office Closing Dates:
    • Labor Day: Monday September 7, 2020
    • Columbus Day: Monday, October 12, 2020
    • General Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2020
    • Veterans' Day: Wednesday, November 11, 2020​
    • Thanksgiving: Thursday & Friday, November 26 &27
    • Christmas Day: Friday, December 25, 2020 ​

  • Licensure Contact Information
  • Public Act 101-0645 extended the timeline by an additional year through June 30, 2021 for retirees to work 120 paid days in the classroom without impacting their retirement annuity.
  • ISBE has enacted emergency rules to enable districts to employ individuals as bilingual educators this fall. Review the emergency rule under Section 1.780 herePDF Document.
  • ISBE has enacted emergency rules to enable districts to employ non-licensed personnel during a state public health emergency to oversee a classroom when the teacher is working remotely. Review the emergency rule under Section 1.630PDF Document.
  • Illinois testing centers have reopened with safety restrictions.  Find more information on the Illinois Licensure Testing System website.
  • Public Act 101-0643 provides licensure exemptions during a public health emergency.  Review the Public Act for full details.
