This page will provide stakeholders such as Regional Offices of Education (ROE), Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs), district administrators, and Illinois educators with information and updates specific to educator preparation and licensure. Information is updated on a quarterly basis​ and reflects content that will develop a better-informed workforce that will ultimately improve the lives of Illinois students.​

 Important Dates

  • ​Per Public Act 101-0643 (formerly known as Senate Bill 1569), all PEL, ELS-CTE, and ELS-CSBO licenses up for renewal this year were extended one year if not renewed by September 1. All eligible licenses have received this extension. Find more renewal information here.
  • If your license was automatically extended for one year, you will need to register your license for the additional year!
  • ISBE Office Closing Dates:
    • New Year's Day: Friday, January 1, 2021
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Monday, January 18, 2021
    • Lincoln's Birthday: Friday, February 12, 2021
    • Washington's Birthday (President's Day): Monday, February 15, 2021
    • Memorial Day: Monday, May 31, 2021

  • Our bilingual education subsequent endorsement requirements have been clarified on our website.  View the requirements​.
  • The requirements to serve in a school district classroom at the early childhood level are separate from the requirements to serve in an early childhood learning center.  The Educator Effectiveness Department does not handle Gateways credentials.  These credentials are separate from holding a Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed in Early Childhood.  You can find more information regarding Gateways Credentialing on our Early Childhood section of the ISBE website.

  • Licensure Contact Information
  • Public Act 101-0645 extended the timeline by an additional year through June 30, 2021 for retirees to work 120 paid days in the classroom without impacting their retirement annuity.
  • ISBE has enacted emergency rules to enable districts to employ non-licensed personnel during a state public health emergency to oversee a classroom when the teacher is working remotely. Review the emergency rule under Section 1.630PDF Document.
  • Public Act 101-0643 provides licensure exemptions during a public health emergency.  Review the Public Act for full details. 

 Professional Development (PD) Providers

  • ​​Pursuant to Article 21B-45(i)(7) of the School Code, approved Professional Development Providers are required to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education prior to offering any professional development activities in the current fiscal year.  If your approved organization still needs to register for FY21, you may do so with the assistance of the  registration guide.PDF Document

 Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC)

  • AA #2000
    • As of January 1, 2021, Administrator Academy #2000 “IL Performance Evaluation - Principal Evaluation Training for Pre-Qualified Principal Evaluators” is the only avenue to complete the initial training required to evaluate principals.
    • The 2-day course covers all aspects of principal evaluations, including professional practice and student growth data. AA #2000 requires pre-work to be completed prior to the first day the course meets. Participants must attend both days of the course and complete the required Application for Dissemination for each day to receive credit for AA #2000.
