Public Act 101-0543 abolished the Illinois State Charter School Commission (the “Commission”) as of July 1, 2020, and transferred all of its statutory responsibilities and powers to the Illinois State Board of Education (the “State Board”). Included in this transfer was the responsibility for the State Board to become the legal authorizer for any charters issued by the Commission during its tenure. As of the date of transfer, there were 11 charters (12 charter school campuses) under the authority of the Commission.
Additionally, the State Board is responsible to hear any possible appeals filed by charters organizations for actions taken by authorizing school districts in Illinois to revoke or not renewal existing charters.
