The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) offers cash reimbursement to help schools serve snacks to children in after-school activities aimed at promoting the health and well-being of children and youth in our communities. The After-School Care   Snack Program is part of the National School Lunch Program.​

Program Overview

  • ​NSLP After-School Care  Snack Programs must:
    • Be sponsored or operated by a school district.
    • Provide organized, structured, and supervised educational or enrichment activities that is open to all students.
    • Serve children age 18 or under.
    • ​Serve snacks after the regular school day has ended to those children participating in the after-school care snack program .

Program Requirements

  • ​Daily Meal Counts
  • Attendance
    • Attendance must be taken for all after-school care snack programs. 
    • When determining average daily snack attendance (ADA) add the attendance for all days of the month for ​children who had access to the program. Divide the total by the number of serving days for the month. The ADA will be included on your monthly claim for reimbursement.   
  • Production Records
    • A daily production record is required for all meal services, and crediting documentation for all items served must be kept on file. Crediting information might include product labels, Child Nutrition (CN) labels, product formulation statements (PFS), and standardized recipes.

  • Civil Rights 
    • Ensure after-school care snack program staff have completed the civil rights training. 
    • If your site participates in the After-School Care Snack Program ensure that the “And Justice for All” poster is in a centralized location.
  • Sponsor Monitoring
    • Sponsors participating in the NSLP After-School Care Snack Program  must review each site two times per year.  The sponsor must conduct the first review during the first four weeks of operation. The second review can be completed at any time during the year.

Reimbursement

  • ​Area Eligible 
    • School site has 50% or more free and reduced eligible students.
    • Each reimbursable snack that is served is claimed at the free rate. 
  • Non-Area Eligible
    • School site has less than 50% free and reduced eligible students. 
    • Each reimbursable snack is counted and claimed according to the child’s eligibility (free, reduced, or paid).
