ISBE recognizes that in order to achieve high standards, some students will need educational supports and other support services that are not currently provided by their regular school programs. Several types of programs in Illinois may provide these additional supports:
  • The Alternative Learning Opportunities Program (ALOP) offers programs with a broader range of academic, behavioral, and social/emotional interventions designed to increase the academic achievement levels of students so that they are able meet the new Illinois Learning Standards and complete their education in a safe learning environment.
  • The Truants’ Alternative and Optional Education Program (TAOEP) supports youth with attendance problems and/or dropouts up to and including those who are 21 years of age, and provides truancy prevention and intervention services and/or optional education.
  • The purpose of the Regional Safe Schools Program (RSSP) is twofold: (1) to increase safety and promote the learning environment in schools and (2) to meet the particular educational needs of disruptive students more appropriately and individually in alternative educational environments.
  • Resources for justice-involved youth help provide information and tools for youth transitioning back into traditional educational settings and practitioners in juvenile justice facilities.
