The Illinois State Board of Education is increasing its efforts to intervene in failing schools, those that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress for seven years or more.
Many of these schools are providing little or no hope of a successful future for their students. In many of these schools fewer than 20 percent of the students are meeting state learning standards. In some cases, less than 10 percent are meeting these benchmarks.
We provide assistance and support to these districts through our Statewide System of Support and some receive additional funding and support through the competitive federal School Improvement Grant process. However, in extraordinary circumstances, certain districts will require a greater level of state directed intervention.
In addition to our ongoing efforts to improve student outcomes in every Illinois district, the State Board of Education has entered into an intergovernmental agreement with each of the districts below in an effort to provide a greater level of intervention and ultimately improve student achievement.
- East St. Louis School District #189
- North Chicago Community Unit School District #187
