Congratulations to the Illinois State Board of Education 2022-23 Student Advisory Council. The 26 members will provide ISBE with student perspectives related to educational concerns across the state.

Eshaam Bhattad is senior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, Eshaam is involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including Student Council, cross country, debate, Model United Nations, Peer Helpers, and Indian Student Association. He is a member of 18 clubs and works with numerous organizations within his community. Eshaam plans to go to law school and aspires to run for office one day.

Akou Bright Doh is a junior at Monmouth-Roseville High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. Bright’s extracurricular activities include Madrigal Singers, a competitive choir program offered at MRHS. She is also a drum major in the MRHS band. Bright is a tutor in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school program. In her free time, Bright likes writing music and dancing. She is also very involved in the Recharge Teen Center, a local center for teenagers that provides various activities on the weekdays.

Crystal Carmona is a sophomore at Rockford Auburn High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Crystal likes playing badminton, skateboarding, listening to music, editing, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys helping her peers and her community.

Ranyia Cox is senior at East St. Louis Senior High School. This is her third year on the Student Advisory Council. Ranyia will also serve on the State Education Equity Committee. At school, she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Superintendent’s Council. Ranyia also is an AP Ambassador and participates in TRIO Upward Bound, Running Start, and the Ladies Achieving Their True Excellence and Social Squad at Southwestern Illinois College. She also runs her own small business.

Jayla Davis is a junior at Springfield Southeast High School. This is her second year on the Student Advisory Council. She participates in the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program, a program for students who aspire to be in the medical field. She also plays the piano and is in the marching band, where she plays the alto saxophone. Jayla also volunteers at her church and is on her school volleyball team.

Olivia Frey is a senior at Niles North High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Olivia enjoys being a part of her school community. She runs the "North Star News," her school newspaper; volunteers at the school's Dance Marathon; and participates in mock trials.

Ashtyn Gallagher is a senior at Dundee-Crown High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, he likes to hang out with his friends, volunteer for his community, and play lacrosse with his teammates.

Cruz Garza is a senior at Zion-Benton Township High School. This is his third year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, Cruz enjoys hanging out with friends, running, and doing yoga. He is also involved in cheerleading.

Soren Gjesfjeld is a junior at Bloomington High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. Soren participates in many extracurricular activities, including Scholastic Bowl, debate team, cross country, Promise Council, Bread Club, and Archive Club.

Jeremiah Griffin is a junior at Lindblom Math & Science Academy High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, Jeremiah likes to play the bass guitar and listen to music. He also plays football and runs track.

Sarah Guerrero Gorostieta is a junior at Fenton High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Sarah likes to play the trumpet, write for her school newspaper, and compete on Fenton’s speech team.

Rossi Gutierrez is a senior at Streamwood High School This is their first year on the Student Advisory Council. In their free time, they like to hang out with their girlfriend and preparing for college in the spring. Rossi is involved in numerous clubs and boards and volunteers at Feed My Starving Children when they can.

Victor Hinojosa is a sophomore at Waukegan High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. Victor wants to study political science and psychology after he graduates from high school. He’s involved in numerous extracurriculars, from being a caucus vice chair and local chapter liaison to the High School Democrats of America to being assistant manager and academic team captain of his school’s Junior ROTC drill and JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl team. He loves to read, bake, and spend time with his family in his free time.

Kaylee Horn is a senior at Carrier Mills-Stonefort High School. This is her second year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Kaylee likes to work on her small business of soap-making and volunteering within her community. She is a member of her school’s Student Council and is the National Honor Society president. Kaylee also participates in Service Club, Math and Science Club, and Pep Club.

Jenna Jiang is a junior at Eldorado High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Jenna likes to do ceramics and is involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including Student Council, Art Club, Spanish Club, and speech team.

Elle Jones is a junior at Tuscola Community High School. This is her second year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, Elle likes to read and bake. She is a member of her school's Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Key Club, and Drama Club. She hopes to attend a four-year university and is interested in psychology and political science.

Suha Khan is a sophomore at Plainfield North High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. Suha enjoys reading, painting, and hanging out with friends in her free time. She is also involved in math team, tech crew, Book Club, Literature Club, and speech team.

AJ King is junior at Peoria Richwoods High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, he likes listening to music and participates in wrestling and track and field.

Lukus Middleton is a sophomore at Litchfield Senior High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. Lukus wants to pursue a career in the mental health field and perform on screen and on stage. In his free time, he loves to be with others and help the community. Lukus is involved in soccer, track, chamber choir, and band. He is a member of his school’s Student Voice Committee.

Dhruv Patel is a senior at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. This is his second year on the Student Advisory Council. Dhruv serves on the leadership team of his school’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. In his free time, he enjoys editing videos and playing recreational basketball.

Jessica Perez-Ferman is a senior at Rockford Auburn High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. She is passionate about public policy and hopes to study law someday. At school, she is a cross country and track captain, National Honors Society member, president of the Model United Nations, and vice president of the Rockford Public School District’s Superintendent Student Advisory Council. She loves staying active, reading, playing violin, and spending time with her family and friends.

Leshawn Sanders is senior at Thornton Fractional North High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. His aspiration is to become a real estate investor to help marginalized communities.

Sareena Shah is a senior at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. Sareena is president of student government and a student representative on the Payton Prep Local School Council. She is also a co-founder of the Re-Write It Project, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting school supplies accessibility in Chicago. In her free time, Sareena enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Sam Siu is a senior at Pekin Community High School. This is his first year on the Student Advisory Council. In his free time, Sam likes to freelance graphics and play basketball. He is also involved in Student Council and Key Club.

Sierra VanMeter is a sophomore at North Greene High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. In her free time, she likes to volunteer in her community and is involved in Student Council.

Izabella Wills is a senior at Georgetown-Ridge Farm High School. This is her first year on the Student Advisory Council. Izabella likes to volunteer in her community, compete in pageants, read books, and spend time with her family and boyfriend in her free time. She is involved in many extracurricular activities within and outside of her school, including cheerleading, Student Council, senior class president, National Honor Society, senior Homecoming court, archery, and the Georgetown Ladies Community Club. She is the GRHS senior correspondent for the News-Gazette and was first runner-up in the Westville Labor Day pageant.
