According to Section 105 ILCS 5/27A-6 of the Illinois School Code, when an authorizer formally approves a charter school for an initial or renewal charter agreement, the authorizer must provide ISBE with formal notification to begin the charter certification process.

A charter school must then submit an initial or renewal certification application to ISBE.  The application consists of the below documents, as well as the charter agreement between the authorizer and school and the Certification of Compliance. The complete application for certification should then be submitted to the Charter Schools Department by sending all documents to charter@isbe.net.

Process

Once all materials are submitted, they are then reviewed by ISBE staff members for compliance with the Illinois School Code. Additional documentation or clarifications may be requested by ISBE staff if needed. Once all are approved by ISBE staff, the certification letter and certificate are prepared for approval by the State Superintendent of Education.

If you have any questions about the certification process, please reach out to the Charter Schools Department at (312) 814-2220 or charter@isbe.net.
