The Standards and Instruction Department is collaborating with educators, school leaders, community partners, and other key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive statewide numeracy plan. This initiative is focused on strengthening mathematics teaching and learning across Illinois. The plan, which will be rooted in evidence-based practices and informed by input from the field, will aim to support student achievement in numeracy while equipping educators with the tools, resources, and professional learning they need to deliver high-quality math instruction at all grade levels.

To help shape the development of the plan, a statewide needs assessment was conducted in spring 2025. This assessment gathered input from the field to identify current challenges and priority areas for support. The feedback will help to inform the creation of a draft plan and development of future resources to meet the diverse needs of students, educators, and school leaders across the state.

The Numeracy Plan Summit was held on June 3, 2025, at the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University. The summit brought together a wide variety of stakeholders, including educators, education leaders, higher education faculty, community organizations, nonprofit advocates, and policymakers. The event focused on identifying the essential components of a statewide numeracy plan and fostering collaboration across sectors. Participants engaged in discussions to share best practices, explore effective instructional strategies, and begin shaping a shared vision for improving mathematics outcomes for all Illinois students.
