Child and Adult Care Food Programs

School Nutrition Programs

  • The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a voluntary program available to all public schools, private schools, and residential child care institutions which agree to operate a non-profit program offering lunches meeting federal requirements to all children in attendance.  The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) offers cash reimbursement to help schools serve snacks to children in after-school activities aimed at promoting the health and well being of children and youth in our communities.
  • The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a voluntary program available to all public schools, private schools, and residential child care institutions which agree to operate a non-profit program offering breakfasts meeting federal requirements to all children in attendance.
  • The Special Milk Program (SMP) is a federally funded program that provides reimbursement for milk served by schools, camps, and child care institutions that have no other federal Child Nutrition Program. Schools in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs may also participate in the SMP to provide milk to children in half-day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs where children do not have access to the other school meal programs.
  • Schools already enrolled in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and/or National School Lunch Program (NSLP) may wish to participate in the Seamless Summer Option. Reimbursement rates for the Seamless Summer Option are the same as the SBP and NSLP rates during the school year. The Seamless Summer Option combines features of the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This option reduces paperwork and administrative burden, making it easier for schools to feed children from low-income areas during the traditional summer vacation periods, for year-round schools, and long school vacation periods (generally exceeding two to three weeks).
  • The Illinois Free Lunch and Breakfast provides free lunches (and breakfasts if a school offers breakfast) to students eligiblePDF Document to receive free meals, per 105 ILCS 125/4 and 23 Illinois Administrative Code 305.10.
