The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school district or nonpublic school to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in at least one language other than English (LOTE) during their 9-12 high school years. The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy program is written into Illinois School Code 105 ILCS 5/2-3.159 and is guided by 23 Illinois Administrative Code 680. The Seal is officially designated on the student's transcript and with a graphic on the student's diploma.
Per 23 Ill. Adm. Code 680, a participating school district or nonpublic school shall notify the State Board of its Seal of Biliteracy participation by October 1 of each year.
