Host school districts play a vital role in the teacher exchange program. The Illinois State Board of Education collaborates with host school districts to strategically place visiting international teachers in Illinois schools that have the most need and in areas that are often beset by teacher shortages. Our goal is to continue to work with Illinois school districts to identify teacher shortages and assist them in filling some of these voids with talented visiting international teachers. ​​

 How to become a Host School District

​School districts interested in hosting visiting international teachers should reach out to us via email at exchangeteachers@isbe.n​et to begin the process.

 School District Responsibilities

​Participating school districts will:

  • Provide a position appropriate for the VIT for at least one year 
  • Provide the VIT with salary and benefits equivalent to those of other full-time teachers 
  • Provide robust mentorship, coaching and additional support to aid in educator success 
  • Provide support to the VIT to identify housing, transportation and other basic needs before and upon arrival and throughout the VIT’s stay in the U.S. 
  • Collaborate with ISBE to complete and provide any materials required for VIT licensure

 IGA Requirement

Illinois administrative code 25, Subtitle A, Section 25.92PDF Document identifies the requirement of an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the school district and ISBE. VIT Program staff will work with school districts interested in hosting VITs to review, issue, and sign an IGA prior to VIT placement in the district. Please email exchangeteachers@isbe.net to begin the IGA process.
