A number of Illinois’ children have parents in the military that have experienced at least one deployment.

While many children of military families are doing well, schools need to be responsive to the unique needs of these children and provide them with a safe haven and access to any additional supports they may need. This can be done through a Comprehensive System of Learning Supports that promotes the necessary conditions for learning and addresses any barriers to learning.

Some classroom interventions for students who have parents that are deployed:

  • Focus on the student and classroom learning
  • Provide structure
  • Maintain objectivity (i.e., respond to events in a calm and caring way and refrain from expressing negative opinions)
  • Reinforce safety and security
  • Be patient
  • Be sensitive to language and cultural needs
  • Acknowledge and validate feelings
  • Reinforce anger management

Purple Star Recognition Program

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) invites schools to participate in the inaugural year of the Purple Star School program, a strategic initiative designed to enhance support for military-connected students. The Purple Star designation will recognize schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

Applications for SY 2025-2026 will be available in IWAS from April 20-May 24. All applicants will be notified of their status prior to Veteran's Day in fall 2026.

To receive the Purple Star designation, schools must:

  • Have a designated school-based point of contact for military families
  • Provide professional development training on military-connected student needs
  • Comply with all provisions of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children
  • Maintain a student-led transition program
  • Maintain a resource webpage for military families
  • Participate in at least three of the following activities: an annual military recognition event, a public military display, a school board resolution, a military appreciation sporting event, a Month of the Military Child activity, or a community service project

As part of the application, schools must provide supporting documentation of the activities and a written narrative demonstrating how the school addresses the transitional needs of military-connected students and families, and attest that the superintendent is aware that the school is applying to be recognized in the Purple Star School program.

The Purple Star designation will be for a period of three years and renewal will be required. Schools that receive the Purple Star designation will be listed on ISBE’s website and receive a congratulatory letter.
